Two of the market’s leading smartphones had the highest rates of device performance issues for their respective operating systems, a new report from Blancco Technology Group (BTG) found. According to data collected for BTG’s first quarter 2016 State of Mobile Device Performance and Health report, Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and Apple’s iPhone 6 topped the charts as the models with the highest failure rates for the Android and iOS platforms. But iOS users may still be better off. The report found Android devices overall severely lagged iOS devices in performance, with a failure rate of 44 percent to iOS’ 25 percent failure rate. Additionally, 74 percent of Android devices were found to be plagued by crashing apps. Figures for app crashes on iOS were not provided. “Android devices seem to be a contradiction in terms,” said Pat Clawson, CEO, Blancco Technology Group. “On the one hand, Android is the number one operating system in terms of global market share. But despite this advantage, Android device performance still lags behind iOS and tends to be plagued by high rates of crashing apps and app cache.” Among Android vendors, Samsung was the manufacturer with the highest failure rate, accounting for 43 percent of total Android failures. The company was trailed by Motorola with 14 percent of Android failures, Lenovo with 12 percent of Android failures, Asus with 6 percent of Android failures and LGE with 5 percent of Android failures. Samsung was also responsible for three of the five Android devices with the highest failure rates, including the Samsung Galaxy S6 (7 percent of total Android failures), the Galaxy S5 (6 percent of total Android failures), and the Galaxy S6 Active (4 percent of total Android failures). The other Android devices with the highest failure rates were Lenovo’s K3 Note (6 percent of total Android failures) and Motorola’s third generation MotoG (5 percent of total Android failures). Out of the devices making up iOS’ much lower overall failure rate, the iPhone 6 topped the list with 25 percent of iOS device failures. The iPhone 5s followed immediately behind, making up 17 percent of iOS failures. The iPhone 6 Plus, 6s and 6s Plus also accounted for their fair share of total iOS failures with 14 percent, 12 percent and 9 percent, respectively. Device failures for both platforms overall were found to be lowest in North America, which carried a 27 percent failure rate to Europe’s 35 percent and Asia’s 55 percent. BTG said the international data used in its report was collected from the company’s SmartChk diagnostics platform. The comapny said “millions of devices” from North America, Europe and Asia were analyzed.
