Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi will reportedly take aim at chip makers Qualcomm and Samsung with the introduction of a budget mobile application processor (APU). According to reports from The Korea Times and BusinessKorea, the processor will be based on an ARM standard core license. Other details about the chip – which has been codenamed Rifle – were not immediately available. Xiaomi’s entrance to the APU market would put it in competition with the likes of Qualcomm and Samsung, which BusinessKorea reported are both trying to expand their APU market share in China. Fellow Chinese smartphone company Huawei and South Korea’s LG also produce APUs. The move comes as Xiaomi looks to reduce costs. The company has previously used Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors in its devices.
